Africa uses technology to perk up its tourism businesses


According to a recent survey, Africa has 27% of internet penetration rate. However, still a lot is to be achieved. Nevertheless, tourism businesses can harness and benefit a lot from this opportunity for sure like one of the eminent players, Jumia Travel are already in the forefront.
Paul Midy, CEO of Jumia Travel said that the company is very interested on utilizing technology to revolutionize the way people prefer to travel. For example, by incorporating Revenue Management Systems, this technology helps to create a smooth booking process for consumers as well as hotel partners.
Midy while speaking in Indaba 2017 travel show in Durban, South Africa on 16th May concluded that utilizing technology to connect African nations via tourism will help to grow the economy of the continent and perk up its competitiveness with other tourist destinations in the world. To quote him, ‘64% of money spent in Africa for travel and tourism is spent by Africans. Therefore, investors should focus more on the one billion people on the continent, and grow domestic tourism.’
High cost of travel in Africa and complexities of getting visas to travel within the continent are some of the challenges that the country is abound with.

Because of this, the Jumia Travel boss echoed sentiments by South African President Jacob Zuma, who during his official opening of the Indaba show addressed African governments to make visa regulations for Africans effortless, “in a bid to create a seamless travel experience and make Africa a destination of choice in the world.” Global tourism recorded its seventh successive year of sustained growth ever since the global financial crisis last year, as per UNWTO report.
